Winter in the Adirondacks – Perfect for House Hunting & Exploring
With home sale prices usually at their lowest in January and February, winter is a great time to search for your dream home on Lake George. It’s also the perfect season to explore all that the Lake George area has to offer. Often touted as a popular tourist destination in the summer, Lake George offers full-time residents an abundance of year-round activities.
Here are just a few of the events and activities we look forward to after the first of the year in the Lake George region. So bundle up, get out there and explore!
Winter Carnival Lake George Village offers a month-long celebration of winter during this annual family-friendly festival. The Winter Carnival takes place each weekend throughout February, and is free to attend. There are chowder, chili, BBQ and chicken wing cook-offs, a polar plunge, fireworks, dog sled rides, races of all kinds – including a comical outhouse race – children’s activities, beach bonfires and so much more!
Ice Bars Found at several local eateries and watering holes scattered throughout Lake George, these super cool attractions feature full bars, seating, glasses, even props, carved from thousands of pounds of ice. Enjoy a frosty beverage, relax in an ice lounge or admire the spectacular ice sculptures. Just be sure to check each location’s calendar, as these Lake George Ice Bars are only around for a limited time.
Cross-Country Skiing & Snowshoeing Lake George Village Recreation Center has several trails perfect for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as Cronin's Golf Course, just 5 miles north in Warrensburg, NY. For evening skiing, try the lighted trails at Crandall Park in Glens Falls. You can lease skis and boots from local sporting goods companies, and snowshoe rentals are available at the Adirondack Mountain Club in Lake George.
Ice Skating While the lake is usually frozen by mid-January, ice skating is not recommended, but there are plenty of indoor and outdoor skating rinks in Lake George. Many of the outdoor rinks offer free skating, some are lighted, and most have warming huts and restrooms. For indoor skating, you’ll need to head south to Glens Falls or Saratoga, just a short drive from Lake George.
Snow Tubing For snow tubing fun, you have 2 parks from which to choose. Head to Tubby Tubes in Lake Luzerne for 9 different tubing runs, a snow coaster and an 8-person family raft, or check out West Mountain’s Tubing Park in Queensbury for chutes, slides, a towing cable and tons of fun for the whole family. If you own snow tubes, the snow tubing hill at Lake George Recreation Center is free for all.
